Form

Liverpool, one point clear at the top of the Premier League, were comfortable 5-0 winners over Watford at Anfield on Wednesday, but away from home the title jitters are more evident.

Debate continues as to whether the 0-0 draw at Manchester United on Sunday was one point gained or two dropped, but what is indisputable is the Reds have won just one of their last five away matches in all competitions.

That came in a 1-0 victory at Brighton thanks to a Mohamed Salah penalty and Everton will be desperate to make up for the narrow loss at Anfield in December when Jordan Pickford's howler allowed Divock Origi to dramatically decide a tight match in injury time.

Everton's defeat at Liverpool totally knocked the stuffing out of the Toffees, who have won only four of their 14 Premier League outings since the Anfield agony. They did, however, make the most of a lengthy break to comfortably beat Cardiff 3-0 on Tuesday.

Tactics

Jurgen Klopp's surprise decision to use Sadio Mane through the middle in place of the injured Roberto Firmino worked a treat as the Senegal speedster scored twice inside 20 minutes against Watford, with Origi operating from the left flank.

The make-up of Klopp's midfield is never easy to guess, but Fabinho looks to have made the number six position his own, leaving Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, James Milner and Gini Wijnaldum fighting for two berths alongside the defensive anchor.

Everton usually play 4-2-3-1, but Morgan Schneiderlin, who started for the first time in a Premier League game since September 16 against Cardiff, impressed in midweek and could be used once more as a defensive shield to repel Liverpool's marauding midfielders.

Team news

Schneiderlin was not the only surprise name to make the team at Cardiff – Phil Jagielka started for the first time since the opening weekend – and Marco Silva will need to see whether the veteran is able to feature again so soon after his return.

Leighton Baines is Everton's only doubt, while Klopp is hopeful Firmino and Dejan Lovren will return to the squad. Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remain sidelined for the Reds.

Verdict

The Merseyside derby is usually tight so the best bets could be to back the half-time draw or under 2.5 goals. Liverpool have dominated this fixture with Everton's last win coming in 2010, but it's usually a dour battle at Goodison Park, where only three goals have been scored in the last four meetings. Liverpool to win 1-0.

Key stats

Everton have not won any of the last 18 Merseyside derbies, although three of the last four at Goodison Park have been drawn.

Six of the last seven derbies at Goodison have been level at half-time.

Only eight goals have been scored in Liverpool's last five Premier League away matches.

There have been 21 red cards in the Merseyside derby - a Premier League record - but the last six meetings have passed by without a dismissal.
