Match preview

Only last week Tottenham were hoping to spend Christmas at number one in the Premier League but they are heading to Molineux hoping not to be dismissed from the title talk before the festive decorations come down.

Spurs had been set to lock down top spot after 90 minutes at Anfield, when they were drawing 1-1 with Liverpool before Roberto Firmino broke their resistance as well as their hearts, and that was followed by a really poor 2-0 home loss against Leicester.

Jose Mourinho will have been heartened by their progress to the semi-finals of the EFL Cup at the expense of injury-hit Stoke on Wednesday, however, it was another game on the clock for his weary squad who will be battling on four fronts in 2021.

Tottenham looked tired against Leicester and maybe it was a case of too many big matches in a short period with Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and the Foxes ticked off in at intense spell between November 21 and December 20.

This is another tough test - Mourinho referred to Wolves as a "top-six team" - and it is understandable that Spurs have been on the drift for this challenge which pits the Tottenham boss against one of his good friends in opposite number Nuno.

It's pretty clear that former goalkeeper Nuno took plenty from Mourinho when he was part of his Porto squad and this could be a highly tactical match between two teams seen at their best on the counter, which could lead to an early stalemate.

Six of Wolves's last 11 Premier League games have been goalless at the break and Spurs were 0-0 after 45 minutes in their away games at Burnley and West Brom - two teams who sat deep in a bid to stop Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son thriving.

Tottenham eventually broke both down, although they need to be wary of a Wolves side whose results have dipped but still managed to beat Chelsea and Arsenal in their last five league matches.

The injury to Raul Jimenez robs Wolves of their attacking focal point and so the path to goal probably comes through the speed of Daniel Podence, Pedro Neto or Adama Traore.

However, Tottenham have shown they are compact with a narrow defence and a midfield that won't venture too far forward, allowing opponents the chance to cross rather than play through them.

Wolves will have to show patience, as will Tottenham, and so too may the TV viewers aiming for a festive treat.

Key stat

Spurs have been drawing at the break in five of their seven away Premier League matches this season.
