Match preview

Manchester City might already have dropped too many points in the title race and another two could slip away when they take on Wolves at Molineux on Friday.

Pep Guardiola's side rattled off 14 consecutive league victories to clinch the title last season and they will have to do something similar to have any hope of overhauling Liverpool.

However, they have grown accustomed to throwing in indifferent performances at regular intervals and are attempting to register a third successive league victory for the first time this season.

Wolves had the measure of City at the Etihad in October – winning 2-0 thanks to two goals from powerhouse forward Adama Traore.

A few eyebrows were raised when Wolves shelled out a reported £18 million for Traore's services in August 2018 and he struggled in his first season, scoring once in 29 league appearances.

He has been vastly improved this term, providing three goals and three assists, and there should be more to come from a player who can be a defender's worst nightmare when operating at full throttle.

Traore's end product has improved and his pace will be a huge weapon against City, who press high and routinely leave space in behind their back four.

City approach the game with rising confidence after impressive victories away to Arsenal (3-0) and at home to Leicester (3-1).

They have racked up 50 goals in 18 games – equal to their tally at the same stage of last season – and have the possible option of calling on Sergio Aguero, who was a late substitute at the weekend.

City's attacking prowess is unmatched in England but they have been conceding too many goals and cannot do anything about strengthening their defence until the transfer window opens.

The Citizens have registered just one shutout in their last 13 matches and will do well to keep out Wolves, who have scored in each of their last 20 fixtures.

Statistically, there would seem to be a high possibility of goals at both ends although this must be weighed up against evidence of tight matches whenever the teams meet.

Last season's contest at Molineux was a tactical affair which finished in a 1-1 draw and the points looked set to be shared at the Etihad this season until Traore popped up with goals in the 80th and 94th minutes.

City will go to Molineux with only victory in mind but Wolves have drawn nine of 18 league games this season and another stalemate looks possible.

Key stat

Wolves have lost only one of their last 13 league games.
