Match preview
West Ham and Watford face off tonight in a huge relegation showdown at the London Stadium where victory for either side should be enough to secure top-flight survival.
The two sides are locked together on 34 points, just three points above the drop zone with three games remaining, and both approach this crunch clash having just recorded important wins.
Watford overcame Newcastle 2-1 thanks to two Troy Deeney penalties while West Ham crushed Norwich 4-0 with in-form Michail Antonio scoring all four goals.
It looked bleak for the Hammers at the end of June following successive 2-0 defeats to Wolves and Tottenham but then came a dramatic 3-2 London derby win over Chelsea at home which has sparked an improvement.
A point at Newcastle was hard-earned and they were unfortunate to lose 1-0 at home to Burnley before thrashing the Canaries on Saturday.
Antonio is not the only Hammer at the top of his game right now as Tomas Soucek has also stepped up in recent weeks with a couple of vital goals, while Declan Rice continues to impress in midfield.
For the visitors, three straight defeats thrust Nigel Pearson’s side back into serious trouble and their dismal away form remains a real concern.
The Hornets have not won on the road in six attempts and have lost their last four away games without scoring.
They have since responded with back-to-back home victories but they are clearly fragile away from the comforts of Vicarage Road.
Both teams have goals in them. Fit-again Danny Welbeck complements Deeney’s threat up front for Watford, while West Ham boast the pace of Jarrod Bowen out wide.
West Ham have won three of the pair’s last four meetings, including a 3-1 win at Vicarage Road earlier this season, but Watford have happy memories of the London Stadium having won last year’s fixture 2-0.
It is hard to split two evenly-matched outfits but in-form Antonio could again inspire the Hammers to edge what is sure to be a nervy affair given what is at stake.
Key stat
Watford have lost their last four Premier League away games to nil.
