Team news

Watford
Gerard Deulofeu, Daryl Janmaat and Isaac Success are long-term absentees for the Hornets.

Southampton
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Sofiane Boufal will be assessed before the game but Jack Stephens and Moussa Djenepo are suspended.

Match preview

Southampton are just three points away from reaching the magical 40 mark but they may be made to wait to get to that target by relegation-threatened Watford.

The Hornets were a shade disappointing when losing 1-0 to a depleted Burnley outfit on Thursday after achieving a credible 1-1 draw at home to Leicester. However, the Hornets should carry more sting back at Vicarage Road.

Nigel Pearson's side are a potent force from set-pieces and that's an avenue they could exploit against Southampton.

Watford had ten shots on goal against Burnley, with eight of those coming from dead-ball situations. The Clarets stood up to the physical challenge well, but Southampton may not be as well-equipped to deal with the onslaught.

Centre-back Jack Stephens is suspended and Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has hinted that the side will feature a change in personnel in some areas.

Stephen's absence could unsettle the Southampton rearguard and if there are any further changes at the back that could open the door for the likes of Troy Deeney and Craig Dawson.

Watford don't carry the same counter-attacking threat without the injured Gerard Deulofeu but it's unlikely Southampton will leave many opportunities for them to break at Vicarage Road.

The Hornets have been supported in the market, as they were against Burnley, but there may still be a bit of value in backing a narrow win for the home side.

Key stat

Southampton have won just two of their last nine matches in all competitions.
