Match preview

Six of the last seven league and cup fixtures between Tottenham and West Ham have been won by the away team but Spurs look primed to snap that trend with a home victory over the relegation-threatened Hammers.

Jose Mourinho's side were not at their best on their return to action against Manchester United but the Red Devils still needed a late Bruno Fernandes penalty to claim a 1-1 draw.

Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and goalscorer Steven Bergwijn were all returning from injury layoffs, so should come on for the run and Dele Alli is available to face the Hammers after serving a one-match ban.

Erik Lamela, Giovani Lo Celso and, if fit, Lucas Moura provide Mourinho with more creative options and despite Tottenham's patchy form they should be a cut above their troubled visitors.

Son, Moura and Kane put them 3-0 up just after half-time in the reverse fixture at the London Stadium, although West Ham scored two late goals to narrow the margin of defeat.

And, for all their problems this season – key injuries, a change of manager, the hangover from last term's Champions League final defeat to Liverpool – Tottenham's flaws pale into insignificance compared to West Ham's issues.

The Spurs defence has been poor this season, conceding 41 goals in 30 league games, but West Ham have shipped 52 and they also lack the attacking quality in the Tottenham ranks.

Wolves were worthy 2-0 winners at the London Stadium on Saturday and David Moyes's men are without a clean sheet in ten matches.

Key midfielder Declan Rice had to fill in at centre-back due to Angelo Ogbonna's absence and Moyes admitted after the game that his attacking unit "didn't get anything going".

West Ham have struggled to match the better teams in the Premier League, which does not bode well as their next two fixtures are London derbies against Spurs and Chelsea.

Wolves became the latest club to complete a league double over the Hammers this term, joining Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester, Crystal Palace and Arsenal.

West Ham have also lost away from home to Sheffield United, Burnley and Everton, failing to score in all three games, so they will have to raise their standards significantly to win at Tottenham.

One quirk for correct-score punters to note is that three of the last seven league meetings between the teams have ended in 3-2 Spurs wins.

That scoreline is a 25-1 chance but given the patchy 2020 form of both sides it may be asking too much for a behind-closed-doors thriller.

However, the Spurs roster looks far stronger than it did during their six-game winless streak just before the season was suspended and they should return to winning ways and plunge the Hammers into deeper trouble.

Key stat

West Ham have lost their last six away matches in the Premier League.
