Match preview

Manchester City overcame a poor first half to beat Tottenham 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium on January 19 and they can capitalise on title rivals Arsenal’s shock defeat at Everton on Saturday by completing a swift double over the other club in north London.

Spurs have been outside the Premier League's top four since a 2-0 loss at home to Aston Villa on New Year's Day and one of the main reasons for their struggles has been their dreadful results against the leading teams.

The traditional 'big six' has probably expanded to a 'big seven' due to Newcastle's progress and Spurs have floundered against their fellow members of that elite group, taking just one point from seven games.

Tottenham's transfer window was largely frustrating until the much-anticipated deal for Sporting right-back Pedro Porro was announced on Tuesday night.

Porro is set to start as a wing-back against City and he could make a positive impact in a position in which Spurs have struggled for the last two seasons.

Tottenham are also looking in better shape in attack with Dejan Kulusevski getting closer to full match sharpness following his January layoff and Heung Min-Son eager to build on his confidence-boosting brace in last Saturday's 3-0 success at Preston in the FA Cup fourth round.

But their tally of 31 goals conceded in the league is the most among the top 12 clubs and there appears to be a lack of belief that they can upset heavyweight opponents.

City are hardly ever short of confidence and should fancy their chances of ending a four-game losing sequence in away fixtures against Spurs.

They struck a psychological blow against Arsenal with a 1-0 success in the FA Cup but they do not have much margin for error in the title race.

City head to the Emirates Stadium on February 15 for the first of two massive league games against Mikel Arteta’s leaders and the Gunners still have a five-point advantage despite their 1-0 loss at Goodison Park.

They threw in a pair of iffy away performances in January, losing 2-0 to Southampton in the EFL Cup quarter-finals and 2-1 to Manchester United in the Premier League, and are perhaps not reaching the levels of consistency that Pep Guardiola would want.

However, a sequence of three home wins, starting with the successful comeback against Tottenham, has settled things down and it would not be a major surprise if City stepped up a level in north London.

They overwhelmed Spurs at the Etihad with a stunning second-half display and there should be only one winner if they can perform from minute one in the capital.
