Match preview

Liverpool's Premier League title hopes have faded considerably in recent weeks and another setback looks likely at Tottenham, where the hosts look overpriced to take the three points.

Jurgen Klopp's side held a four-point lead on Christmas Day but have failed to triumph in their last five Premier League games – their longest winless run since January-February 2017 – and are out of the FA Cup after Sunday's 3-2 loss at Manchester United.

As a consequence they trail title favourites Manchester City by seven points and, instead of battling for first place, they face a serious scrap for Champions League places.

Tottenham – one point back having played one game less - are in a similar position.

They may not have entirely given up hope of landing a first league title since 1961 but have lots of ground to make up and Champions League qualification is likely to be at the front of their minds.

The Londoners have not won successive league games since November, but are unbeaten in eight games and are competing in four competitions.

Jose Mourinho's side advanced to the FA Cup fifth round with a 4-1 success at Wycombe on Monday but there were a few bumps on the road in Buckinghamshire before the Londoners wrapped things up with three late goals.

The Portuguese boss brought on four of his star players in the second half and Tanguy Ndombele shone the brightest with two well-taken goals.

Of the starters, Harry Winks and Gareth Bale could be pleased with their contributions but it will be a struggle for either to get into Mourinho's first-choice side, which is largely set in stone.

Mourinho's counter-attacking approach has drawn some criticism but it has worked well in the highest-profile games.

Spurs have taken ten points from a possible 15 against the Big Six and their mid-December 2-1 loss at Liverpool could easily have been different had they made the most of some very good chances.

Liverpool would argue they deserved the win after dominating for long periods, but they will face similar tactics in north London and may be less well equipped to cope due to their injury issues.

Klopp witnessed some positives in the weekend loss at Old Trafford, but there were too many errors at the back and even top-class goalkeeper Alisson had questions to answer after allowing Bruno Fernandes's match-winning free kick to defeat him on the side of the goal he was supposed to be protecting.

The Reds' defence may benefit from the return of Joel Matip, who was rested at the weekend, but Virgil Van Dijk's absence continues to hurt them and their attack (no goal in four league games) has been misfiring.

Spurs will fancy their chances of becoming the latest side to shut out the Reds and a moment of magic from Heung-Min Son or Harry Kane could settle the match in their favour.

Key stat

Liverpool have not won any of their last five league games
