Match preview

Tottenham play host to London rivals Fulham in a fixture reshuffle after Spurs’ Premier League clash with Aston Villa was postponed and the lack of preparation is not going to help the Cottagers’ chances.

Scott Parker was left furious with the short notice his Premier League strugglers were given after the clash was confirmed on Monday because of a coronavirus outbreak in the Villa camp.

Just two days earlier, Parker had fielded a strong side in their FA Cup third-round trip to QPR, where they required extra-time before stamping their authority on the tie in a 2-0 win.

While Parker is unhappy at the prospect of facing Spurs at only two days' notice, Jose Mourinho is unfazed and their preparations have been far smoother.

Mourinho was able to ring the changes for Saturday’s FA Cup visit to Merseyside minnows Marine. Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son, Pierre Holberg, Tanguy Ndombele and Eric Dier were among their long list of stars to be given a break.

Despite dropping points in four of their last five Premier League games, Tottenham are still in the thick of a congested title race and given the circumstances, would be expected to prevail here.

Fulham have stepped forward markedly since their early-season struggles and have tasted defeat in only one of their last six matches, which was a 2-0 defeat at title favourites Manchester City.

Parker’s side have toppled Leicester and played out draws with Liverpool and Southampton during their improved run, but they have also been held by Brighton and Newcastle, and finding a regular source of goals has been the issue.

While the Cottagers are more organised defensively and harder to beat thanks to a loan swoop for Lyon centre-back Joachim Andersen and the midfield presence of Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, their attacking players need to step up if they are to avoid relegation.

Ademola Lookman has looked bright but star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is struggling for consistency and collectively Fulham have managed only 13 goals in 15 league games.

Fulham have fired blanks in seven of those contests, and in three of their last five games, and they are unlikely to carve out many goalscoring opportunities against a Tottenham side set up to frustrate their opponents.

Spurs’ added quality in the final third should tell but goals may be at a premium.

Both teams have scored in only three of Tottenham’s last 11 league contests and their disciplined defence have kept six clean sheets in that period.

Only two of Tottenham’s last nine Premier League outings have rewarded over 2.5 backers - none of those contests has featured four goals or more - so take Mourinho’s men to grind out a narrow win.

Key stat

Only one of Fulham's last 13 Premier League games has featured more than three goals.
