Match preview

Tottenham's title hopes have been dealt several blows but Jose Mourinho's side can wrap up a disappointing month on a positive note by defeating Fulham.

Mourinho was widely praised for his tactical awareness after 2-0 home wins over Manchester City and Arsenal which helped lift Spurs to the top of the table.

But his cautious approach has come under fire in recent weeks with the Lilywhites taking only two points from their last four matches.

After Sunday's 1-1 draw at Wolves, where Spurs lost the shot count 11-6, Mourinho pointed the finger at his players for lacking the ambition to build on Tanguy Ndombele's first-minute goal.

But his last two substitutions – Moussa Sissoko for Ndombele and Erik Lamela for Heung-Min Son - sent out a negative message to his players, resulting in a passive approach which contributed to Romain Saiss's late leveller.

Mourinho can be a stubborn character but at this point he seems aware of the need to get Spurs playing more on the front foot.

Changes of personnel and a return to a back four can be expected and Tottenham should offer a greater attacking threat and have a better chance of winning.

An assessment of Fulham's recent results may depend on your outlook.

On a positive note the Cottagers have lost just one of their last six games but harder taskmasters might point out that they have won only one of their last eight.

However, Fulham are undoubtedly tougher to beat than they were earlier in the season and they are likely to be stronger than they were for Saturday's 0-0 draw at home to Southampton with key midfielder Mario Lemina set to return.

Scott Parker's side gave Saints a tough game and won the shot count 10-3 although they were grateful for a couple of tight VAR offside calls which denied their opponents two second-half goals.

The Cottagers are likely to defend deeper against Spurs and use a counter-attacking strategy, something they employed to good effect in their 2-1 win at Leicester and 1-1 home draw with Liverpool.

However, they haven't kept a clean sheet in seven Premier League away games this season and may struggle to contain a Spurs side determined to get their season back on track.

Tottenham are likely to take more risks than in recent weeks and a shutout may elude them, so it makes sense to bump up the potential returns by backing the home win and both teams to score.

Key stat

Fulham have not kept a clean sheet in their last eight Premier League away games.
