Tottenham have sacked manager Mauricio Pochettino after five and a half years with last season's Champions League finalists lying 14th in the Premier League.

The Argentinian had been backed into favouritism to be the next top-flight boss to leave over the international break.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said: "We were extremely reluctant to make this change and it is not a decision the Board has taken lightly, nor in haste.

"Regrettably domestic results at the end of last season and beginning of this season have been extremely disappointing."

Jose Mourinho is odds-on to take over in the first shows of betting after the announcement, with Carlo Ancelotti 17-2 and Massimo Allegri (14-1) also prominent in the early market.

Spurs finished fifth, third, second, third and fourth in the league under Pochettino and were beaten by Liverpool in the 2018-19 Champions League final.

But, after winning only three of their first 12 league games this season, they have drifted to 4-1 for another top-four finish.

Paddy Power are betting on when Mourinho takes over, quoting 4-6 that he is appointed before midnight on Sunday and 16-1 that he wins the Premier League as Spurs manager.
