Match preview

Sheffield United responded to recording the worst ever start to a Premier League campaign with a valiant performance against Brighton on Sunday but they were denied maximum points for the 14th time this season.

The Blades went into their clash with the Seagulls with only one point from their opening 13 assignments but Jayden Bogle's 63rd-minute strike looked to have put them on course for a first victory of the season.

Unfortunately for Chris Wilder's men it was not to be and a late Danny Welbeck equaliser kept them winless and saw them cut to 2-11 for relegation.

But while performances have been lacking, expected goals suggests the Blades should have accrued nearly ten more points than they have done this season and they can run Everton close at Bramall Lane.

Nine of their 12 losses have been by single-goal margins and their 26 per cent possession against Brighton suggests they are unlikely to throw men forward in search of points.

With that in mind, although Everton look a solid bet to prevail, a low-scoring game could still be on the cards.

The Toffees have enjoyed a mini revival in the Premier League recently, claiming the scalps of Chelsea, Leicester and Arsenal but two of those wins were by settled by a solitary goal.

Carlo Ancelotti's men have not been the most solid of sides at the back themselves this term but they should be able to keep tabs on a misfiring United attack, especially if Oliver Burke's disappointing miss against Brighton is an indication of their quality in the final third.

Sheffield United have managed only eight goals in their 14 league fixtures and another narrow defeat could await them so punters are advised to back Everton to win and under 3.5 goals.

Key stat

Sheffield United have failed to score in four of their seven home league matches this season.
