Premier League: Tottenham v Chelsea

Where to watch

Sky Sports Premier League, 4.30pm Sunday

Match odds

7-5 Tottenham, 19-10 Chelsea, 11-4 draw

Form

Tottenham were 11 points off the Champions League qualification spots when Jose Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino as manager but they host London rivals Chelsea knowing a victory will see them jump above the Blues.

Spurs have won four of their five Premier League matches under Mourinho, beating West Ham, Bournemouth, Burnley and Wolves. Those five fixtures produced 21 goals.

Chelsea's run of six wins on the bounce from September 28 to November 9 feels like a long time ago, and Frank Lampard's side have lost four of their last five top-flight outings.

They have not kept a clean sheet on their travels and the recent poor spell has included home defeats to West Ham and Bournemouth.

Team news

Tanguy Ndombele is struggling to be fit, while Hugo Lloris, Erik Lamela and Ben Davies are ruled out for the hosts.

Ross Barkley, Fikayo Tomori and Olivier Giroud need to be assessed.

The tactical battle

A fascinating match awaits between Mourinho and Lampard, who has already got one over his former Chelsea boss when leading Derby to a penalty shootout success over Manchester United in 2018.

Chelsea clearly hold the midfield advantage with N'Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho superior by some margin to Eric Dier and Moussa Sissoko.

Only Manchester City have averaged more possession than Chelsea in this season's Premier League and how Spurs compensate for their lack of quality in that area could determine the match because Tottenham hold the aces in the final third.

Verdict

Chelsea have struggled in their traditional big-six battles this season - they have lost to Liverpool, City and United twice - plus were held to a home draw by highflying Leicester.

Tottenham are heading in the right direction and deserve to be narrow favourites but over 2.5 looks a safer bet. Draw 2-2.

Key stats

  • Tottenham have kept just two Premier League clean sheets this season
  • Dele Alli has scored six goals in seven matches against Chelsea
