Team news
Man Utd
Jesse Lingard (knock) will be assessed. Paul Pogba, Eric Bailly and Timothy Fosu-Mensah remain sidelined.
Everton
Theo Walcott and Morgan Schneiderlin have joined Andre Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin on the sidelines. Seamus Coleman, Lucas Digne, Yerry Mina and Fabian Delph are all doubts.
Match preview
Duncan Ferguson made the instant impact that Everton fans had been hoping for last weekend but his winning streak looks destined to end at one.
The second instalment of Big Dunc’s caretaker reign is a short hop to Old Trafford where Manchester United are unlikely to be quite such obliging opponents for the Toffees as Chelsea were.
Fergie preached the simple things before his debut as boss – passion and character, the traits which were hallmarks of his playing days.
And the same players who had scandalously downed tools under Marco Silva duly gave their all to earn a thoroughly-deserved 3-1 win over Frank Lampard’s young charges.
Chelsea, however, were meek and basically allowed Everton to dominate them. United, at home and buoyed by a pair of outstanding triumphs over Tottenham and Manchester City, surely won’t be as generous.
Everton are out of the bottom three as a result of last Saturday’s success but they still resemble a bottom-half outfit. They have had a wretched away record for years and this game looks United’s to win at a pretty decent price.
Everton have lost six of their last seven away games. They have won on only one road trip in the Premier League since March and that was at Southampton, who have been arguably the worst top-flight team at home in 2019.
Admittedly, all those stats were chalked up under Silva and Ferguson has undoubtedly breathed new fire into the bellies of the players. But while we know he’s got the passion, does he possess the nous to be able to figure out how to improve what they do on their travels?
United should have too much for them. The hype surrounding the midfield partnership of Scott McTominay and Fred has been over the top but they are operating efficiently and can run the show again against a depleted opposing midfield.
United have improved enormously in defence and their pacy frontmen will be a major challenge for Everton’s back five, who have been accident-prone all season. They have kept one clean sheet in 14 games and several key figures are either ruled out or struggling to be fit.
United have only two defeats in 13 and made it three straight wins with Thursday night’s 4-0 hammering of AZ when, once again, their youngsters were thrown in.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is building a team around home-grown, young talent and, while he seems to be surviving on a knife-edge, he has done enough over the last few weeks to impress the hierarchy and impatient fans.
Their pace in the final third is what makes them scary and now, with some added discipline and a defence which is looking more assured, they can further reduce the gap to those above them.
Key stat
Everton have won on only one of their last 26 league visits to Old Trafford.
