Form

Much has changed since Liverpool comfortably beat Manchester United 3-1 at Anfield on December 16, Jose Mourinho's last match in charge of the dishevelled Red Devils.

Paul Pogba spent the match on the subs bench after being dropped by Mourinho, but the Frenchman has made a major impact with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the wheel.

United have won 11 of their 13 matches since sacking Mourinho with Solskjaer leading the club to victories at Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea and their only defeat coming against Paris St-Germain in the Champions League.

Second-placed Liverpool, level on points with Manchester City having played a game fewer, are in a slightly sticky spell with the 0-0 stalemate against Bayern Munich on Tuesday their third draw in four fixtures.

Tactics

Solskjaer, with Mike Phelan helping out, has shown himself to be tactically flexible during his short spell as manager, and he used a midfield diamond for Monday's excellent 2-0 success at Chelsea.

Pogba assisted one and scored another, taking his goal contribution to 14 since Mourinho departed with Heung-Min Son (16) the only Premier League player involved in more goals and assists during that period.

The one game where Pogba failed to shine was against PSG when Marquinhos did a superb man-to-man marking job on the World Cup winner. That may give Jurgen Klopp something to think about, particularly as he has a similar player to copy that tactic with in utility man Fabinho.

In the attacking third Liverpool will be looking for Mohamed Salah to come to the party - the Egyptian king has not scored against United since his arrival from Roma.

Team news

Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard were initially ruled out but there has been a suggestion they are progressing well, while Marcos Rojo should be available. Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia are unlikely to feature.

Virgil van Dijk returns from a European suspension and Dejan Lovren could also be back. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has returned to training but remains short of match fitness and Joe Gomez is also out.

Verdict

This is a tough game to assess and it could well be pivotal in Liverpool's hunt for a first title since 1990.

A draw would still keep things in their own hands and the Reds may need to settle for a point against a rejuvenated United, who have taken down a number of the big six already under Solskjaer.
