Form

Manchester United have lost seven of their last nine matches to well and truly end Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's honeymoon period.

Even their two victories during this poor spell - 2-1 home wins against Watford and West Ham - were dreadful performances. Watford had eight shots on target, while the Hammers were on the wrong end of some poor refereeing decisions.

Despite that United could move level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea, who were held to a 2-2 draw by Burnley on Monday, if they collect maximum points in the battle for Champions League qualification.

Dodgy away form has cost Chelsea. The Blues have lost on the road to all of the top seven and their sole success away to a top-ten team came at Watford.

Tactics

Solskjaer keeps juggling his pack and switching formation, trying to find the right formula, and sometimes using players out of position, but one reason for his early success was that he used a more simple plan.

A big decision comes between the posts where Spanish stopper David de Gea, culpable for at least one of Manchester City's goals in their 2-0 derby win on Wednesday, continues to be heavily criticised for recent performances.

Argentinian Sergio Romero is a hugely experienced keeper who could come in if De Gea is dumped, but how Solskjaer lines up his starting 11 is difficult to predict.

Chelsea are easier to call. They play the same way every match under Maurizio Sarri, although the Italian does sometimes use Eden Hazard as a false nine on difficult away trips.

Team news

Antonio Rudiger is expected to return for Chelsea, who should also have N'Golo Kante available. Marcos Alonso is doubtful and Callum Hudson-Odoi has been ruled out.

Ander Herrera and Eric Bailly have returned to training, but Phil Jones is a major doubt.

Verdict

This is a tough match to assess - United are on a rocky run and Chelsea find it difficult away to the big six, where a number of their performances have not been up to the required standard. The Blues may also be content with a point if Arsenal don't beat Leicester earlier in the day.

A low-scoring contest with under 2.5 goals may be the best bet. United are without a goal in four hours 40 minutes and it is nearly nine hours since they scored from open play. Chelsea have failed to score in five of their last seven away trips, notching only at Fulham and Cardiff. 1-1 draw.

Key stats

  • Twelve of the last 16 meetings between United and Chelsea have finished with under 2.5 goals
  • United have lost only three of their last 28 Premier League home matches
  • Chelsea have won on just one of their last ten trips to Old Trafford
  • Both teams to score has landed in 24 of United's 35 league matches this season - the joint-most alongside Arsenal
