Bookmakers have trimmed Tottenham for a Premier League top-four finish after the club named former Chelsea and Inter boss Antonio Conte as their new manager on Tuesday.

Spurs, who sacked Nuno Espirito Santo on Monday, are a best-priced 8-1 to secure Champions League football next season but bet365 saw fit to cut them from 7-1 to 6-1 to finish in the top four.

Nuno's departure came following a 3-0 defeat at home to Manchester United at the weekend and the club moved quickly to appoint Conte, who has been out of work since leaving Inter in the summer, on a deal which lasts until summer 2023.

The 52-year-old Italian opened up as the 2-1 favourite immediately after Nuno's sacking was announced and was quickly backed into odds-on on Monday as it became apparent that he was the overwhelming favourite.

Conte left Inter by mutual consent shortly after leading the club to Serie A glory last term and had previously turned down the Spurs job in the summer. However, he has since explained that the approach came too soon after his San Siro departure.

Tottenham appointed Nuno instead and, while the Portuguese started the season with three straight Premier League wins, things quickly turned sour as Spurs lost five of their next seven league games.

They are currently ninth in the Premier League, ten points adrift of Conte's former club Chelsea, and five points behind fourth-placed West Ham.

Conte, who led Chelsea to the Premier League title in 2016-17 and also won three successive Serie A titles with Juventus, could be in the dugout for Thursday's Europa Conference League clash with Vitesse if his work permit is granted in time.

Spurs are 13-2 second favourites to win the Conference League and 6-4 to pick up three points in Conte's first Premier League game in charge - against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.
