Match preview

Frank Lampard pipped Steve Bruce to take second place in the 2020-21 Premier League sack race but the Newcastle boss remains on borrowed time. However, that doesn't mean the Magpies are completely without hope against Leeds.

The Whites have lost five of their last seven away games and are going through a lull themselves, so it's hard to see why they should be odds-on to win at St James' Park no matter how poor the home side are.

Marcelo Bielsa's men have conceded at least three goals in six of their ten away matches. That said, Newcastle have taken nine games to score their last three goals and have not managed three in a single match since October, so it's unlikely that the Leeds defence will be overrun.

But Leeds are too inconsistent to warrant being odds-on shots away from home.

They have lost three in a row, failing to score in any of them, and were thoroughly outsmarted by Brighton last time. A ten-day break should have done them good.

The Toon have gone 398 minutes since they last found the net and they found it almost impossible to carve out any chances of note in Saturday's 2-0 loss at Aston Villa.

As unappetising as Leeds are at their price, Newcastle are hard to fancy at any price.

It was a thriller when the teams last met, Leeds running out 5-2 winners, but neither side is playing with the same zip now and this probably won't be anywhere near as entertaining. At least one team to fail to score could be a fair bet given their current droughts.

Key stat

Leeds have not drawn any of their last 16 away games in all competitions.
