Team news

Newcastle
Paul Dummett is sidelined for the hosts while midfielder Miguel Almiron is a slight doubt after just returning from international duty.

Brentford
Josh Dasilva, David Raya, Kristoffer Ajer and Mads Sorensen are all ruled out while Yoane Wissa and Mathias Jorgensen are being assessed. Mathias Jensen has completed his quarantine period and could be available again.

Match preview

Newcastle's Saudi Arabia-backed takeover was finalised last month but the club's new era arguably begins this weekend when new manager Eddie Howe takes charge of his first game at home to Brentford.

And while the club quite clearly have big aspirations for the future, the immediate goal will be to get a first Premier League win of the season on the board and move away from the drop zone.

The 'new manager bounce' theory is often a weak argument for backing a team but there is no denying the atmosphere will be much better at St James' Park this weekend.

And the Magpies look worth a bet simply due to the circumstances surrounding their opponents.

Brentford have lost their last four league games and are likely to be missing a handful of key players including Josh Dasilva, Kristoffer Ajer and Mads Sorensen.

They have been wasteful in the final third recently and are worth opposing on Tyneside.

Key stat

Brentford have scored only three goals from 63 shots in their last four Premier League matches.
