Match preview

While Liverpool have sealed the title and Norwich have become the first team relegated, one of the main talking points of the post-lockdown Premier League has been the re-emergence of Manchester United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are strong favourites to claim a top-four finish after a ten-game unbeaten run but it is the style of their play that has caught the eye.

Jose Mourinho's often unpalatable football seems a distant memory and suddenly Solskjaer seems firmly entrenched in a job that seemed to be slipping away from him before the break.

It is a good time to be a United follower again and the catalyst for their improvement appears to have been the signing of midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

But it is not just his seven goals in ten games that have made a huge difference as his effect on others has also been marked.

Paul Pogba looks inspired and there is little doubt that the service Fernandes provides has benefited Anthony Martial, a recent hat-trick scorer against Sheffield United, Marcus Rashford and the promising Mason Greenwood.

So progress is being made in the attacking third and that is a major cause for optimism at Old Trafford.

Their next test, against Southampton, is an interesting one.

The Saints kept faith with manager Ralph Hasenhuttl after their 9-0 defeat to Leicester in October and their away form has been the platform upon which their mid-table finish has been based.

Following a 3-0 loss at Burnley on August 10, the only team Southampton have failed to score against in an away league game are Liverpool.

They have also won seven of their last ten away matches, which suggests they will adopt a positive approach on their trip to Old Trafford, where they have avoided defeat in four of their last six visits.

United have kept clean sheets against the Blades, Brighton and Aston Villa since their return to action but they seem set to be tested to a greater degree on this occasion.

Danny Ings could provide them with difficulties, having scored four goals in his six outings since the return and while they admittedly had to defend for their lives in beating Manchester City last week, they have enough to trouble a United defence who have not really been tested lately.

The Saints are capable of scoring a goal but it is difficult to bet against United's forward line, so with cramped odds offered about a home win, the prices about them claiming three points with both teams scoring appear worthy of investment.

Key stat

Manchester United have scored more than once in nine of their last 12 league home matches.
