Match preview
Manchester United have not been in the thick of a title race for several seasons but they are in a strong position this time and can reduce the gap to leaders Liverpool to two points by defeating Wolves at Old Trafford.
At this time of year the clubs with the strongest squads have a big advantage and there are options aplenty for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should he wish to freshen up the side who drew 2-2 at Leicester on Saturday.
Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood were among the players left out of the starting line-up against the Foxes and all three will be hopeful of seeing some action against Wolves, who are unbeaten in four league matches against United since winning promotion in 2018.
Wolves have had success against the big teams thanks to a combination of solid defence and swift, incisive counter-attacks, although they played more on the front foot on Sunday when drawing 1-1 at home to Tottenham.
A point was the least Nuno's side deserved but they had to use up a lot of energy and will have had a shade less than 48 hours to recover before taking to the field against United.
The Wolves boss would no doubt love to make a few changes but his options are restricted by a small squad and a mounting injury list.
The influential Raul Jimenez, Jonny Otto, Leander Dendoncker and Willy Boly were all absent against Spurs and their problems appeared to increase when left-back Fernando Marcal suffered an awkward fall and failed to finish the game.
Other Wolves players are likely to be struggling with fatigue but there is little wriggle room for Nuno, who included teenager academy graduates Owen Otasowie, Taylor Perry, Luke Cundle and Theo Corbeanu among his substitutes on Sunday.
He may have to go with largely the same players and they could struggle to reach the same intensity levels. Any dip in performance could be costly against a United team on an upward trajectory.
Three weeks ago the Red Devils were under pressure after exiting the Champions League with a 3-2 loss at RB Leipzig.
But they have gone nearly two months since their last Premier League defeat, a 1-0 reverse at home to Arsenal, and have emerged as genuine title contenders.
United's Premier League home record of two wins, two draws and three defeats needs to improve but they will be targeting victories from this week's contests against Wolves and Aston Villa to set them up perfectly for their trip to Liverpool on January 17.
The Wolves match looks the easier of the two games and United should pick up the points in fairly comfortable fashion.
Key stat
Manchester United are unbeaten in their last nine domestic matches.
