Match preview

Manchester City strolled back into Premier League action by beating Arsenal on Wednesday and they will expect more of the same on Monday evening against Burnley.

While their title defence is all but over, City already have the EFL Cup in the bag and with the FA Cup and Champions League still to play for, they will look upon this task as a further chance to build confidence.

Sean Dyche's side have a miserable record at the Etihad, and the inevitable rust that comes with not playing for three months means Burnley could be in for a tough night against a club they have not beaten away from home since 1963.

City were serene in swatting aside Arsenal 3-0 and the lack of atmosphere at the Etihad, playing in an empty stadium, did not seem to affect them.

The Citizens capitalised on an early injury to Pablo Mari and then preyed on his replacement David Luiz's foibles. The Brazilian's mistake provided Raheem Sterling's opener, before he dragged back Riyad Mahrez for a penalty and a red card followed.

Phil Foden came off the bench to complete the scoring and looks set to fulfil a similar role this evening. However, Fernandinho, Bernardo Silva and Rodri are all pushing for starts, as is Sergio Aguero.

While he missed out through injury as Gabriel Jesus scored twice in December's 4-1 win at Turf Moor, Aguero looks set to get the nod and he has a fabulous record against the Clarets, scoring nine times in his last eight appearances against them.

Burnley went into the break in decent form, remaining unbeaten in seven. However, they have not beaten City in their last nine meetings and may struggle without a competitive game under their belts. They have been beaten on their last five trips to the Etihad, conceding an average of 4.25 goals in that spell.

Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood - so often the talismanic force that sees Burnley through - are set to miss the game, but even if they were present, the gulf in class between these sides appears too great.

City looked sharp on Wednesday and given their matches this season have averaged a Premier League high of 3.52 goals per game, punters should expect more of the same.

Key stat

Sergio Aguero has scored nine times in his last eight games against Burnley in all competitions.
