Match preview

West Brom confounded the odds at Manchester City in Slaven Bilic's final match in charge but they are unlikely to repeat the feat under Sam Allardyce when they travel to Premier League champions Liverpool.

Bilic was sacked despite his side's 1-1 draw at 1-10 shots City and Liverpool will go off at a similar price as they bid to claim a 33rd victory in their last 34 league games at Anfield.

Allardyce's return to the top flight was not an enjoyable one as the Baggies lost 3-0 at home to Aston Villa and had captain Jake Livermore sent off in the first half.

Even before that red card, Villa were all over West Brom, who suffered a ninth defeat in 14 matches since winning promotion from the Championship and lost the shot count 19-1.

It could be a case of damage limitation for the Baggies against a Liverpool side whose 7-0 win at Crystal Palace last weekend ensured that they would have a four-point lead at Christmas.

The quality of the Reds' finishing at Selhurst Park was sensational – they scored with seven of their eight shots on target – and impressive West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone can expect another busy 90 minutes.

Liverpool have won seven out of seven in the league at Anfield this season, scoring at least twice on every occasion, and they have seen off Leicester (3-0), Wolves (4-0) and Tottenham (2-1) in their last three home games.

Centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez remain sidelined but Liverpool's injury problems have eased in other departments with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain getting sharper week by week and James Milner and Xherdan Shaqiri hoping to return to the squad.

Both teams have scored in ten of Liverpool's 14 league matches this term but even without Van Dijk and Gomez they have let in only three goals in their last six outings.

Jurgen Klopp's men conceded only twice from open play in six Champions League group games and they have little to fear from a West Brom attack who have struggled with the step up to the top flight.

Six of the Baggies' nine league defeats have been to nil while they also conceded five goals in losses at Everton and at home to Crystal Palace.

West Brom showed some defensive pluck under Bilic in the draw at the Etihad and 1-0 defeats to Tottenham and Manchester City.

However, a trip to Anfield is arguably the toughest fixture in European football at the moment and it will take all of Big Sam's motivational skills to keep the scoreline respectable.

Liverpool showed their gritty side to edge past Spurs before a magnificent attacking display at Palace and they should ease to a third win on the trot with 3-0 and 4-0 looking the most tempting correct-score bets.

Key stat

All seven of Liverpool's home league matches this season have featured over 2.5 goals.
