Liverpool's stranglehold on the Premier League title race has increased after two goals from Virgil Van Dijk sealed a 2-1 victory at home to Brighton and extended their lead to 11 points

It was another unspectacular performance from Jurgen Klopp's side, who registered a 14th successive home league victory despite not playing anywhere near their peak.

And there was a sting in the tail for the Reds, who lost goalkeeper Alisson to a red card in the 76th minute and conceded a 79th-minute goal to Lewis Dunk.

Alisson is suspended for Wednesday's Merseyside derby at Anfield but it was still a fantastic weekend for Liverpool, who are 2-5 to finish top of the pile.

Manchester City are 9-4 to defend their crown after drawing 2-2 with Newcastle at St James' Park.

City twice hit the front through Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne but were pegged back by goals from Jetro Willems and Jonjo Shelvey.

Newcastle never looked out of the game and fed off the defensive uncertainty of City, who have not kept a clean sheet in their last seven matches.

Chelsea remained fourth after a shock 1-0 loss at home to West Ham.

Aaron Cresswell scored the only goal at Stamford Bridge, ending the Hammers' eight-match winless sequence.

Chelsea have been shunted out to 75-1 to win the title and are just six points above Tottenham, who rose to fifth after a 3-2 victory at home to Bournemouth.

Two goals from Dele Alli were instrumental for Spurs, who have won all three matches since Jose Mourinho's arrival.

Southampton boosted their survival hopes, coming from behind to win 2-1 at home to basement boys Watford.

Ismaila Sarr had given the Hornets a half-time lead but Danny Ings and James Ward-Prowse responded for Saints, who are just two points from safety.

Goals from Wilfried Zaha and Jeffrey Schlupp eased Crystal Palace to a 2-0 triumph at Burnley which lifted the Eagles into the top half.
