Match preview
A week is a long time in football, so a fortnight off must have felt like forever for under-pressure pair Brendan Rodgers and Steve Cooper.
Bottom club Leicester host 19th-placed Nottingham Forest in Monday’s Premier League action, and the two coaches will be hoping the time away will have reinvigorated their players.
The East Midlands rivals meet at the King Power Stadium looking to kickstart their campaigns, and Rodgers says the return from the international break offers “a new game, a new season”.
A reset is probably what the Foxes need after taking just one point from their opening seven games.
That draw came on the opening weekend against Brentford, where they squandered a two goal lead, and their current run has done little to quell the summer speculation regarding the futures of both their coach and best players.
Rodgers has admitted his frustration at the Leicester board’s lack of investment. Belgian defender Wout Faes and free agent Alex Smithies are hardly replacements for globally recognised talent Wesley Fofana and club icon Kasper Schmeichel.
Cooper is also thought to be under pressure, despite ending Forest’s 23-year wait for top-flight football – the Tricky Trees’ enigmatic owners are said to be eyeing their next new manager.
A win in their second outing against West Ham hinted at a glorious return, but the board’s transfer Tetris has left Cooper struggling to fit all his pieces together.
The sheer number of players who signed on at the City Ground means it could take Cooper until the November break for the World Cup to decide on his best team, but in the meantime he has to find a way to grind out results.
That is something his side have failed to do since that win over the Hammers, taking just a single point from their last five Premier League games.
Despite the results, there remains a first-day-of-term excitement about Forest and their games are always fun, with a total of 16 goals scored in their last three outings.
The same can be said of Leicester, whose last two matches produced 15 goals alone, and both teams have scored in both clubs' last two games.
A clean sheet for either side would probably mean a win but such a luxury is unlikely to be afforded to Rodgers or Cooper.
Excitement seems almost guaranteed at the King Power but Leicester’s extra nous suggests that Rodgers’ reset could get off to a winning start.
