Match preview

Everton's struggles from last season remain ongoing, although there's enough resilience about the Toffees to suggest they can avoid defeat at Elland Road on Tuesday night.

It's no wins in four for Frank Lampard's men, with narrow defeats against Chelsea and Aston Villa accompanied by 1-1 draws against Nottingham Forest and Brentford.

They are creating chances – they rank sixth for shots taken in the top flight – but the absence of anyone to convert those opportunities continues to drag them down.

Everton have carved out more openings than Leeds, something that would definitely not have been the case when gung-ho Marcelo Bielsa was in charge of the Whites.

Jesse Marsch has tempered Leeds' panache somewhat, although they remain a good, positive watch and seven points from a possible 12 at the start of a season in which many observers had the Yorkshiremen down as relegation contenders, isn't to be sniffed at.

Their one loss came on Saturday at Brighton and they could have had few complaints about the 1-0 scoreline. Prior to that they had enjoyed a nervy 2-1 home win over Wolves on the opening day, a riotous 3-0 romp past Chelsea in their last home outing and a comic-book 2-2 draw at Southampton which could have been anything.

The ghosts of Bielsa haven't been completely exorcised from Elland Road, clearly.

Their two home wins are particularly good news given they signed off last term with just one win in their last nine league outings in front of their own supporters.

In contrast, Everton have won only once on their travels in 12 months, a truly alarming stat which was probably why Lampard seemed so content about coming away from Brentford on Saturday with a point, a match in which they led for an hour courtesy of Anthony Gordon's goal but would have been hard on the Bees had they won.

Toffees' fans aren't overly impressed with the ex-Chelsea schemer's five-man defensive set-up but they should be pleased to see new striker Neal Maupay leading the line. Albeit the irony won't be lost on many that he arrived form Brighton, a club who also had an unbelievable knack of failing to convert chances.

Everton are showing plenty of resilience to compensate for a lack of class, though. Amadou Onana looks like he will improve the midfield and there is a little more hope now in a frontline of Demarai Gray, Maupay and Anthony Gordon.

Leeds have been strengthened astutely by Marsch in the summer – Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson look like transfer-market masterstrokes – and they'll be busy from the off, pressing high and relentlessly as they did to such good effect against Chelsea.

But they still concede too many chances and a side who were a warm order for the drop less than a month ago have got to be too short at a shade of odds-against.

Take Everton to make it three draws in a row.
