Match preview

The goals are flying in at Elland Road and they also stack up whenever Leeds and Brentford play each other, so don't expect a let-up on Sunday afternoon.

Leeds and Brentford might be seen as the warm-up act for Arsenal against Manchester United but if the Whites and Bees play to type, fans will be begging for an encore.

Three Premier League showdowns between these bright and energetic teams have produced 14 goals while the last five matches at Elland Road have produced 27 goals, culminating in Wednesday night's 5-2 drubbing of Cardiff in a wonderfully entertaining FA Cup third-round replay.

But while goals seem easy to predict, forecasting the winners isn't quite so straightforward.

Leeds have won only three times at home in the Premier League, a competition in which they have won just twice since August.

A record of two clean sheets in the last 15 tells you everything and if you are conceding almost 14 shots per game then the chances are goals will be scored at the wrong end.

Only five teams allow more shots a match than Leeds – and one of those is Brentford.

David Raya, like Ilian Meslier, is far busier than is healthy with Daniel Farke, rather like Jesse Marsch, struggling to bring down the barricades at times.

Brentford, who have had the week off, are in a far better run of form than their hosts having lost just once in the league in more than three months.

They signed off for the World Cup with a stunning 2-1 success at Manchester City and the break clearly didn't hamper them, since they have taken ten points out of a possible 12 on their return.

They have scored at least two goals in each of their last six while penalty king Ivan Toney – 5-1 in first-scorer betting and rightly always popular – has scored six in his last five in all competitions.

They have won their last two on the road and while they take the odd beating – Arsenal, Newcastle and, more worryingly, Villa have all thumped the Bees by three-goal margins and more – they are also supremely confident.

Leeds have plenty of weapons, and Willy Gnonto is the latest starlet to shine. The Italian international, scorer of three goals in four games, is 8-1 to score first.

It's a game that is likely to get stretched early and stay stretched with Brentford the value given how little home advantage seems to apply at Leeds in the league.
