Match preview

Fulham's wins over West Brom and Leicester last month have raised hopes that they can extend their stay in the Premier League beyond this season but the December schedule has not been kind to Scott Parker's men.

Parker praised his side's spirit after last weekend's 2-0 defeat at Manchester City although that scoreline did not reflect the scale of the Citizens' dominance.

Fulham were 1-0 down inside five minutes and two goals behind midway through the first half of a game in which they had just 31 per cent of possession and one shot on target.

It was the fifth time in 11 games that Fulham have lost to nil, including 3-0 home defeats to Arsenal and Aston Villa, and the Championship playoff winners face another brutal test at home to champions Liverpool.

The Reds are still missing Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Thiago Alcantara but goalkeeper Alisson may return to replace impressive understudy Caoimhin Kelleher.

The injury crisis at Anfield is certainly easing and whoever keeps goal could be protected by a strong back four of fit-again Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Fabinho and Andy Robertson.

Jurgen Klopp has not exactly played down Liverpool's injury woes in his press conferences and post-match interviews but despite their problems they have claimed handsome wins over Leicester and Wolves in the Premier League.

A 1-0 home win over Ajax sealed top spot in their Champions League group and in Kelleher's last three appearances he has been beaten only by a Midtjylland penalty on Wednesday.

With Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum, Naby Keita and impressive youngster Curtis Jones jostling for places in midfield, the Reds are unlikely to be overpowered in the middle of the park.

And their attacking quality is such that Diogo Jota, if passed fit after picking up a knock in midweek, may well find himself back among the substitutes despite nine goals in nine Premier League and Champions League starts since arriving from Wolves.

The 6-4 about Liverpool winning to nil makes plenty of appeal despite Fulham's undoubted improvement in recent weeks.

They lost their first four games, failing to score in three of them, before a 1-1 draw at Sheffield United where Aleksandar Mitrovic missed a penalty.

Ademola Lookman and Ivan Cavaleiro also failed to convert from the spot in narrow defeats to West Ham and Everton but the Cottagers created little at Manchester City last weekend and it could be a similar story when they welcome the top-flight champions.

Key stat

Fulham have lost eight of their nine Premier League games against teams above them in the table.
