Match preview

Sometimes things aren't as bad as they seem, but in Newcastle's case they might just be worse.

The Magpies have collected 19 points this season and sit 16th in the table, but even that meagre tally looks like an overachievement on nearly every measure.

Steve Bruce's side are the 19th best in the section in terms of total shots, shots on target and expected goals. They are just one place better in regards to touches in the box and xG from open play and they are bottom of the Premier League pile when it comes to possession.

The Magpies are on an 11-match winless run and they have lost their last five Premier League matches on the bounce.

Bruce has moved to switch formations in the hope that his side will prove more effective going forward, but all that seems to have done is open them up at the back.

Jamall Lascelles has struggled to recapture his best from, after suffering from Covid-19 and the Toon Army have conceded seven goals in three games since their captain returned.

Everton have lost just one of their last 11 matches and in James Rodriguez they have one of the stars of the Premier League.

Dominic Calvet-Lewin has done well this season and if Carlo Ancelotti can get Richarlison and Abdoulaye Doucoure firing alongside his big two there is certainly scope for this Toffees side p[le.

Everton can be backed at odds-against giving Newcastle a one-goal start on the Asian handicap and that looks a more than fair offer.
