Match preview

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the winning-goal hero of Manchester United's greatest comeback in the 1999 Champions League final and the Norwegian needs something special to save his managerial career at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer has a knack of conjuring up wins when the pressure is on and he cannot afford to end a miserable week with a defeat to Everton at Goodison Park.

United were poor in last Sunday's 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal and even worse in their midweek Champions League loss at Istanbul Basaksehir.

Even before those setbacks, Solskjaer was feeling the heat following dismal home defeats to Crystal Palace and Tottenham in the Premier League.

His side have been more effective away from home this season, with pacy forwards Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood helping them to five wins out of five on the road before the Istanbul debacle.

Their beaten opponents in that run ranged from Luton in the EFL Cup to Paris St-Germain in the Champions League and one consistent factor for United has been their ability to score goals away from home.

Less reliable, however, is a defence that went AWOL in Istanbul allowing veteran striker Demba Ba to give his side the lead with ridiculous ease on Wednesday night.

They were torn apart by Tottenham before the international break and can expect a challenging 90 minutes from an Everton attack led by in-form striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Despite United's attacking riches, Calvert-Lewin is favourite in the first-goalscorer betting after starting the 2020-21 season with 12 goals in 12 appearances for Everton and England.

The Toffees' chances will be boosted if James Rodriguez is passed fit and goals look likely given the balance of the two sides.

United's last seven games away from Old Trafford have all featured at least three goals while Everton's home league matches this term have produced a glut of goals.

Carlo Ancelotti's side beat West Brom 5-2, West Ham 4-1 and Brighton 4-2 before a dramatic 2-2 draw with Liverpool. They also conceded twice in recent defeats at Southampton and Newcastle.

While neither team's defenders can be relied on to do their primary job well, United centre-back Harry Maguire could cause problems in the opposition box.

Maguire scored a fine header in the 4-1 win at Newcastle last month – one of three efforts on goal he had against the Magpies – and he had four of United's eight attempts against Arsenal last weekend.

Key stat
