Match preview

There will be an unusual backdrop to the Merseyside derby in terms of atmosphere but there may not be anything weird about the result and Everton fans are likely to be feeling blue after Liverpool's visit to Goodison Park.

No doubt there will be relief among the Toffees faithful that Liverpool can no longer win the Premier League title on enemy turf. However, it is surely only a matter of days before the Reds' 30-year wait for a championship is over and Jurgen Klopp's men can add another three points to their already extraordinary total.

A staggering 27 wins in 29 matches has taken Liverpool 22 points clear of a Manchester City side who toy with most of their opponents and the gap to bottom-half Everton extends to 45 points.

That huge chasm does not tell the whole story as Everton could well be on the up under Carlo Ancelotti, the vastly experienced Italian who has managed elite clubs in all of Europe's top leagues. But now he faces quite a difference challenge than when he was in charge of Real Madrid or Milan.

Those sides knew they belonged on the biggest stage, but it's difficult to argue against Everton suffering some kind of inferiority complex when it comes to this Merseyside derby.

Mikel Arteta and Tim Cahill were on target the last time Everton managed to get one over their rivals from across Stanley Park, way back in October 2010, and that mental block has already seen them lose two derbies in embarrassing circumstances this season.

First was a thumping 5-2 rout in the Premier League which saw the demise of former boss Marco Silva and Ancelotti will have realised the task at hand shortly after that when a team of Kop kids delivered a 1-0 Liverpool win in the FA Cup third round.

Goodison has been something of a leveller in recent years - four of the last five derbies at Everton have finished in draws and three were 0-0 - in what is normally not a fun spectacle for neutral viewers as the Toffees turn the clash into a frantic dust-up.

However, there's no Gwladys Street End crowd to rile the Reds this time and the class of Liverpool should shine through, enabling them to dish out a first Goodison Park defeat to Ancelotti.

Given the lengthy break, it would be no surprise to see the likes of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah take a while to find their rhythm but the beauty of this Liverpool side is the sheer number of weapons available to Klopp.

The decisive moment could come from the one of the front three, or the flying full-backs and they are also dangerous from set-pieces, while a defensive record of only 21 goals conceded is the best in the Premier League.

Key stat

Everton have not won a Merseyside derby since October 2010.
