Match preview

The new year brings hope of better times ahead for many but Sheffield United are heading for relegation from the Premier League and their situation could look even more hopeless after they take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Chris Wilder's side have collected two points from a possible 48 (an average of 0.125 points per game) and they are on course to set an unwanted Premier League record by failing to reach the previous lowest tally of 11 set by Derby in 2007-08.

United have been competitive in the majority of their matches and 11 of their 14 defeats have been by a single goal, including Tuesday's 1-0 loss at Burnley when they won the shot count 7-5.

But they are suffering from desperate lack of quality and confidence and it is hard to see how they can dig themselves out of trouble.

Better quality players are needed but United face a difficult transfer window because any permanent signings would anticipate playing second-tier football next season.

Premier League matches are often decided by moments of magic and Palace are supplying enough of those thanks to the outstanding contributions of Wilfried Zaha.

The Ivorian is on course for the best season of his career, having delivered eight goals and two assists, and he will be full of confidence after firing in a superb volley in Monday's 1-1 draw at home to Leicester.

Zaha is the main reason Palace are eight points above the bottom three and one more flash of brilliance could be enough to see off the blunt Blades, who could fail to score for the tenth time this season.

Key stat

Sheffield United have lost 17 of their last 19 Premier League matches.
