Match preview

Manchester City's galaxy of stars clocked up plenty of air miles during the international break but should be sharp enough to get their Premier League campaign back on track with victory at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace have been awkward customers for the Citizens in recent seasons. They were the only side to win at the Etihad last term with a 3-2 success and held the Manchester club to a goalless draw at home in December 2017.

They are not ideal opponents for a City team trying to narrow an eight-point deficit on league leaders Liverpool but Pep Guardiola can get a response from his side after they lost 2-0 to Wolves last time out.

They followed their previous Premier League defeat to Norwich City with an 8-0 annihilation of Watford as part of a five-match winning streak in all competitions.

Their record on the road is to be admired as well.

They have won ten of their last 11 away matches in the top flight and, even with Palace's solid start to the new campaign, it would be dangerous to oppose a City team who are one of the greatest to have played in the Premier League era.

Sergio Aguero was involved in a car crash this week but escaped without injury and will be assessed before the trip to Selhurst Park.

Their star striker should still start but City are blessed with attacking riches beyond the Argentinian in Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling, who were all in superb form for their countries recently.

Palace, meanwhile, could be without defender Mamadou Sakho but they could cause City problems at the other end.

A bet on a City win and both teams to score is becoming an increasingly popular punt as the champions have looked more vulnerable at the back with John Stones, who has been in training this week, and Aymeric Laporte both sidelined recently.

Guardiola may be forced to field yet another makeshift rearguard. The visitors have kept just one clean sheet in their last four league assignments and could be susceptible to the pace of Jordan Ayew, Wilfried Zaha and Jeffrey Schlupp on the counter attack.

Palace adopted that same tactic in a 2-1 win over Manchester United this season, despite amassing only 28 per cent possession, and are value to get on the scoresheet.

But a wounded City with key creative force Kevin De Bruyne, who has eight assists in eight league matches, back in their ranks, should have enough to take maximum points before Liverpool play United on Sunday.

Key stat

Manchester City have scored at least two goals in 11 of their last 14 away league matches.
