Match preview

Chelsea came off worst in an eight-goal thriller against champions Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday but their quest for a top-four finish should ensure a far more cautious approach to their home game against Wolves.

With rivals Leicester and Manchester United playing each other, the Blues require only a point to secure Champions League football next season and they are unlikely to take many risks against a Wolves outfit who are chasing a sixth-place finish, their best position in the top flight since 1979-80.

Frank Lampard’s men have won their last five Premier League games at Stamford Bridge, claiming the scalps of Tottenham and Manchester City in that time and conceding only twice, and they were courageous in defeat against Liverpool.

Having trailed 4-1, Chelsea rallied following the introduction of Christian Pulisic and Tammy Abraham from the bench and they grabbed the next two goals to pile the pressure on Jurgen Klopp’s Reds.

That followed a 3-1 FA Cup semi-final triumph over Manchester United at Wembley, which strengthened the view that Chelsea are moving in the right direction under Lampard and that bigger things are to come.

The Blues, whose attack will be bolstered by the signings of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech next season, have been inconsistent but most of their mishaps have come on their travels.

Any mistakes are likely to be punished by a well-organised Wolves, who are only four points behind the Blues.

Chelsea were emphatic 5-2 winners at Molineux earlier in the season but matches involving Wolves tend to be low-scoring and given the circumstances it is worth backing this one to follow suit.

Nuno’s side give little away and only Burnley’s Nick Pope and Manchester City’s Ederson have kept more clean sheets than Rui Patricio’s 13.

Wolves boast the Premier League’s fifth-best defence with only 38 goals conceded in 37 games and a back three of Willy Boly, Leander Dendoncker and Conor Coady has worked particularly well.

Both teams have scored in only two of Wolves’ last 13 league matches and just one of their last nine outings has featured three or more goals, so it could be wise to expect another slow-burner at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have kept clean sheets in seven of their 18 home games, which includes in three of their last four, and with a draw seemingly suiting both teams, punters can expect this one to be cagey.

Key stat

There have been two or fewer goals in each of Wolves's last four away league games.
