Match preview

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been battling to win over the sceptics ever since he became Manchester United manager so leading his side to the top of the Premier League table would be a pleasing milestone for the Norwegian.

A point against Burnley at Turf Moor would take United above champions Liverpool but given their impressive away form anything less than a win would be a disappointment.

Solskjaer's side have scored 21 goals in seven Premier League matches on the road this term, winning six of them and drawing 2-2 at Leicester where Axel Tuanzebe scored a late own goal.

United also won their final four road games of the 2019-20 campaign and they have scored at least twice in their last 11 league matches away from Old Trafford.

Solskjaer knows, of course, that his side cannot rest on their laurels. They made a dismal start this term, losing three of their first six games including a 6-1 walloping by Tottenham, and prompting inevitable calls for regime change at the club.

Last week's EFL Cup defeat to Manchester City took a bit of the shine off United's recent run, particularly as it was their fourth consecutive loss in a knockout semi-final.

They bounced back thanks to Scott McTominay's early goal against Watford in the FA Cup third round and should continue their goalscoring form against a Burnley side who were taken to penalties by MK Dons.

Sean Dyche named a strong side against the League One club but the Clarets needed a 94th-minute equaliser from Matej Vydra to avoid a third-round exit before winning the shootout.

Dyche's team selection reflected the lack of depth of his injury-hit squad and, while United also have concerns over the fitness of Paul Pogba, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly, they should prove too good for their hosts.

Burnley have rallied after a slow start in which they picked up only two points from their first seven games. Their next eight results included home wins over Crystal Palace, Wolves and Sheffield United as well as a 1-0 victory at ten-man Arsenal and draws with highflying Everton and Aston Villa.

Dyche is undoubtedly hampered by a lack of attacking quality although United's swashbuckling approach to away games tends to offer their opponents goalscoring opportunities.

Both teams have scored in all seven of the Red Devils' away league games indeed they have had to come from behind in each of their six wins and that trend should continue at Turf Moor.

Key stat

Manchester United are averaging three goals per game away from home in the Premier League this season.
