Match preview

Turf Moor may be I'm A Celebrity... star Jordan North’s idea of a happy place but it has been a far happier place for Burnley’s opponents recently and another tough test is in store as they play host to Crystal Palace.

Sean Dyche’s men have only two points to show from their opening seven Premier League games and all three of their Turf Moor tussles have resulted in defeat.

Injuries to important first-team players has been an ongoing issue for Dyche this season, but it is their lack of creativity in forward areas which should concern him most.

The Clarets boast the league’s bluntest attack with just three goals scored - two of which came in the same game at Leicester - and they have now gone four consecutive matches without making the net bulge.

Each of Burnley’s three league visitors, Southampton, Tottenham and Chelsea, have left Lancashire clutching maximum points and a clean sheet and Palace may fancy their chances of repeating the feat.

Dyche’s toothless hosts have managed only 19 shots on target in seven games - no side have created fewer goalscoring opportunities - and their direct approach has been too easy for opposing defences to deal with.

Strikers Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes continue to give it their all but the long ball forward remains their most dangerous asset and there appears to be no plan B when things are not going for them.

Their defensive discipline, however, is one thing that hasn’t deserted Burnley and their shape and organisation will always keep the Clarets competitive.

For all their struggles, Burnley have conceded just 12 times this season and they managed draws at West Brom and Brighton by keeping clean sheets.

Southampton and Tottenham could manage only 1-0 wins at Turf Moor and even with the winless run totting up, the Lancashire side's defensive resoluteness and unity remains intact.

Palace have made an excellent start to the campaign with 13 points from eight games, but their counter-attacking style is suited to having less possession against better opposition and they may see more of the ball than they would prefer at Turf Moor.

The Eagles are unlikely to find it easy to locate space behind this compact Burnley defence and the pair may cancel one another out.

A low-scoring contest looks likely so punters should take a chance on the game featuring one or no goals. Four of Burnley’s last six league games have and that was also the case in June when Burnley recorded a narrow 1-0 win at Selhurst Park.

Key stat

Both teams have scored in only one of their last six meetings, with three of those games ending 1-0.
