Match preview

Shell-shocked Spurs are on the rocks but Brighton could be on the end of an attacking backlash.

Tottenham cannot be considered bankers at the Amex Stadium given the second-half horror show in Tuesday's 7-2 Champions League battering by Bayern Munich, a result which promoted manager Mauricio Pochettino to favourite in the Premier League's latest sack-race betting.

Their fragile confidence, particularly in terms of chucking away leads, must make Tottenham's backers edgy. But the forward line is in fine working order and picking Pochettino's team to score two or more goals negates the threat of another defensive debacle.

Spurs fans will be heartened by the lack of a Robert Lewandowski or Serge Gnabry in the opposition ranks.

The pair scored six of Bayern's seven goals and the other was a Joshua Kimmich long-range effort.

Bizarrely, Spurs played their best football of the season in the opening 30 minutes, and it was a close contest on expected goals but the bigger concern is any lasting mental damage on the squad rather than the performance.

The last three goals came at a time when Spurs had too many attacking players on the pitch and could of been tired from playing with ten men for an hour against Southampton three days earlier.

Tottenham have scored two goals in each of their two Champions League encounters and also bagged at least twice in five of their seven Premier League fixtures with Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane offering a twin attacking threat.

Only the big two of Manchester City and Liverpool have scored more than Tottenham's 14-goal tally and, despite the doom and gloom, they would go level on points with third-placed Leicester with a victory.

Brighton conceded four on their trip to City and were fortunate to lose only 2-0 at Chelsea last week in a worrying performance from Graham Potter's side, who are winless since an opening-day 3-0 romp at Watford.

Potter has clearly changed Albion's style since replacing Chris Hughton. They are joint-seventh in the average possession table, but just Watford and Newcastle have scored fewer goals.

The thrust of the injured Leandro Trossard has been missed, while the recent 0-0 stalemate with Newcastle highlighted their attacking woes. They had 71 per cent of the ball but don't seem to go anywhere, averaging just three shots on target in this season's Premier League.

Seven of their eight goals in all competitions under Potter have come in the second half, a statistic which suggests Albion will allow travel-sick Spurs to grow into the game rather than go for the throat.

Key stat

Tottenham have not won any of their last 13 away matches against domestic opponents.
