Match preview

South-coast sides Brighton and Southampton have been involved in some Premier League crackers this season and they can round off the weekend action with a bang when they meet at the Amex Stadium.

Southampton have emerged as surprise contenders for a European berth thanks largely to their front-foot approach under Ralph Hasenhuttl and they were unlucky in a pulsating 3-2 defeat to Manchester United last time out.

That was the sixth time in seven matches that the Saints have scored at least two goals in a Premier League contest and in James Ward-Prowse, Che Adams and Danny Ings, who looks set to return from the sidelines, they have multiple sources of goals.

And even though centre-back Jan Bednarek put pen to paper on a new four-and-a-half year deal this week, the fact they have only one clean sheet in five away fixtures this terms suggest their defence remains fragile.

That combination has resulted in some impressive results such as wins over Everton (2-0) and Aston Villa (4-3) as well as a draw with Chelsea (3-3) but also some disappointing losses to Tottenham (5-2) and that Manchester United loss last time out.

It is therefore advised punters swerve the results market for this clash and instead go for goals.

Their league position may say otherwise but Brighton have also evolved into an entertaining, attacking unit under Graham Potter and their tally of 14 league goals in ten games is better than that of Arsenal (ten) and Wolves (11) among others.

Neal Maupay is still the main man with four strikes but he is one of nine players to have scored in the Premier League this season and their range of goalscoring options makes them a dangerous side.

The Seagulls won the shot count 11-6 in their 1-1 draw with Liverpool last Saturday and they will be stronger going forward with the return of marauding wide player Tariq Lamptey from suspension.

The stalemate with the Merseysiders was the eighth time in ten league matches this season in which Brighton have seen both nets bulge and although that is a tempting bet, over 2.5 goals at a shade of odds-on makes greater appeal.

Brighton's matches have featured an average of three goals per game and Southampton's an average of 3.5 in this league campaign and a bet on overs could also land if one side takes the initiative and registers a comprehensive win.

Key stat

Six of Brighton's ten league games have featured over 2.5 goals this season.
