Match preview
Things are already looking bleak for Sheffield United in their bid to beat the Premier League drop, but they can give their supporters some Christmas cheer with a rare point at Brighton.
The Blades have made the worst start to a season in English top-flight history, collecting only one point from 13 games, and they arrive at the Amex having suffered eight straight defeats.
However, that long list of losses has seen them square up to Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, West Ham, Southampton, Leicester and Manchester United so realistic winning opportunities have been few and far between.
Chris Wilder’s side also suffered a 1-0 defeat at relegation rivals West Brom during that period but they did more than enough to win at The Hawthorns – they won the xG 3.32 to 1.29 – and only had themselves to blame.
Finding a regular source of goals has been a big problem for the blunt Blades, who have netted just seven times in 13 outings, but the same is true of Brighton.
The Seagulls were held to a goalless draw at Fulham on Wednesday, just three days after suffering a 3-0 defeat at Leicester.
Graham Potter’s side have earned many plaudits for their performances this season but with only one win in 11, their points tally isn't matching up to the praise.
The long-awaited return of supporters to the Amex may give the Seagulls a lift but it will need to as they have won only one of their last 15 home league games, with both Burnley and West Brom pinching points on their trips to the south coast.
With a low-scoring contest likely – under 2.5 goals is 8-11 – the chances of Sheffield United stopping the rot with a point look greater than the odds imply.
Key stat
Brighton have drawn three of their last four home league games.
