Team news

Brighton
Adam Webster and Alireza Jahanbakhsh both picked up knocks on Thursday but should be fit in time for Monday's clash. Jose Izquierdo is recovering from knee surgery and is the only long-term absentee.

Newcastle
Fabian Schar has been sent to see a specialist and is expected to miss the rest of the season, while there are big doubts over the fitness of Florian Lejeune, Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff, Paul Dummett, Allan Saint-Maximin, Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles. Kell Watts has been granted permission by the Premier League to play and is expected to start in defence.

Match preview

Brighton know a point will be good enough to secure their top-flight status on Monday and they will be confident of obtaining that result when they welcome Newcastle United to the Amex Stadium.

The Seagulls snapped a two-game losing run with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against rivals Southampton last time out, the club's 13th draw of the campaign, and another year in the promised land is just one point away.

Graham Potter's men have struggled on home soil recently, losing 3-0, 3-1 and 5-0 to Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City, but they should be able to arrest that poor run of form against an injury-ravaged Newcastle.

Visiting boss Steve Bruce is facing a defensive crisis. Fabian Schar has been sent to a specialist, while Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, Florian Lejeune and Paul Dummett are all major doubts to feature.

Kell Watts, 20, has been given permission to play by the Premier League and he could make his top-flight debut alongside Federico Fernandez - the only senior centre-back who is fit.

Throw in the fact that star winger Allan Saint-Maximin is also a doubt to play and there is unlikely to be much of an attacking threat from the Magpies, who are already safe from relegation and have lost their last three matches.

Three of the five Premier League meetings between these two have ended up in draws while the reverse fixture was a 0-0 stalemate back in September.

Both teams have scores in only one of those five matches so it seems unlikely there will be a host of goal-scoring chances in this engagement.

With Brighton only needing a point and Newcastle seemingly on the beach, backing the draw looks to be the route to go down in the sixth top-flight meeting between the pair.

Key stat

Brighton and Newcastle have drawn a combined 23 Premier League games this season
