Match preview
Brighton and Bournemouth continue to win plaudits for the way they play their football but it’s points not praise they need going into the second half of the Premier League campaign.
Albion are far easier on the eye under Graham Potter than they were when Chris Hughton was in the dugout, but they are two points worse off under Potter than they were at this stage last season under his predecessor.
And Bournemouth, despite a superb start to the season under Eddie Howe, are six points worse off than they were going into the final fixture of 2018.
Locked together on 20 points, just two points above Aston Villa in 18th, these are anxious times for these sides.
The layers are firmly behind Brighton for this crunch showdown between two sides so evenly matched that they boast the same number of wins – five – and an identical goal difference.
It may not be the time to put a lot of faith in Albion at odds-on given they are without a win in four and have triumphed in just one of their last eight.
Bournemouth are in equally unimpressive form with only a pair of wins in their last 13. They’ve scored only two goals in their last five matches, both courtesy of Dan Gosling.
But Bournemouth boast a level of inconsistency which tends to make them a genuinely attractive punt at big odds.
Good enough to win 1-0 at Chelsea on their last road trip, they aren’t going to be daunted by a trundle along the coast to the Amex.
They looked okay in a 1-1 draw at home to Arsenal and the return of key frontmen from injury – notably Harry Wilson and Josh King – should improve their prospects.
It’s a worry for Howe quite how few goals they are scoring but they’ll like the fact that Brighton haven’t kept a clean sheet in eight and have picked up just a solitary point out of a possible nine from their last three home games.
No one is chinning Albion. Their luckless 2-1 loss at Tottenham was the latest in a number of near-misses but they, like Bournemouth, are struggling for goals.
Both sides are averaging fractionally over a goal a game so it’s hard to imagine this being a goal-laden thriller, although doubtless much the same was said prior to their last meeting in April when Howe’s visitors raced to a 5-0 win.
Key stat
Bournemouth are unbeaten in their last 11 meetings with Brighton.
