Match preview

Premier League leaders Arsenal were in the zone before the World Cup but they face a tricky restart at home to West Ham and might have to settle for a share of the points.

The break will have affected some teams more than others and one of Arsenal's worst fears were realised when Gabriel Jesus suffered a knee injury during Brazil's 1-0 loss to Cameroon.

Jesus's impressive performances have been instrumental in transforming the Gunners from Europa League qualifiers to title challengers and it will be fascinating to see how his absence impacts Arsenal's season.

The 25-year-old has been a fan favourite since his superb home debut against Leicester when contributing two goals in a 4-2 victory.

Jesus has scored five goals and registered as many assists, but while those stats are nothing out of the ordinary, his work ethic, technique and deceptive strength are key elements to the way Arsenal like to play.

Mikel Arteta favours a high press which requires his team to attack and defend as a unit.

Eddie Nketiah will get his chance, having made all of his 12 league appearances this season off the substitutes' bench, but he has a tough act to follow.

Nketiah has been getting starts in the Europa League and was part of the Gunners' EFL Cup team which bowed out in the third round with a 3-1 loss at home to Brighton.

That defeat to Brighton gave an insight into how much Arsenal rely on some their first-choice players and there are doubts over a few of them with Oleksandr Zinchenko battling to shake off a calf strain and William Saliba needing to be assessed after playing a bit-part role in France's World Cup tilt.

From a West Ham point of view it looks like a decent time to face the Gunners and it is an opportunity they will not want to waste.

The Hammers had a surprisingly poor opening phase of the season, leaving them just one point outside the bottom three, but there has been no serious talk of making a change in the dugout.

David Moyes has come through some sticky spells since returning for a second crack at the West Ham job but rightly has some credit in the bank after last season, when he took the Hammers to a Europa League semi-final and lead them to seventh in the Premier League.

Moyes's squad has been stretched by Europa Conference League commitments and, since starting the season with three successive league defeats, they have struggled to find any consistency.

However, their European campaign does not resume until March and, in the meantime, the Hammers will hope to climb into a more favourable league position.

A lot of damage has been done but West Ham can repair some of it by taking a point at the Emirates.
