Match preview
Mikel Arteta's Arsenal ended the 2019-20 season on a high as two goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sealed victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup final.
Four months later the mood at the club is very different. Skipper Aubameyang has scored twice in 12 Premier League matches and his own goal gave struggling Burnley a 1-0 win at the Emirates on Sunday.
That made it four straight home defeats for the Gunners, who are 15th in the table after their worst start to a league season since 1974-75 and have scored only twice in their last eight matches.
Arteta insists Arsenal's performances have been better than their results suggest and he was effusive in his praise for his side after the 2-0 derby defeat at Tottenham.
The Gunners' cause has not been helped by Nicolas Pepe and Granit Xhaka's red cards for violent conduct against Leeds and Burnley but it is still hard to make a case for them against in-form Southampton.
The Saints have been well backed following Arsenal's weekend woes and their regulation 3-0 home win over Sheffield United.
Ralph Hasenhuttl's men are brimming with confidence, less reliant for goals on top scorer Danny Ings this season, and they should be backed for a fast start at Arsenal.
While the Gunners have scored only one first-half goal in their last nine league matches, Saints regularly blast out of the blocks. They have been leading at half-time in six of their seven wins this season and were 2-0 up against Manchester United at the break before losing 3-2.
Key stat
Southampton's first-half goal difference this season is +9 while Arsenal's is -5.
