Match preview

Manchester United had a positive December – winning six of nine matches – and can start 2020 on a successful note by defeating Arsenal at the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta is getting plenty of support from Arsenal fans, who are witnessing signs of improved performance.

The Gunners finished strongly in their 1-1 draw at Bournemouth and started on the front foot in their 2-1 loss at home to Chelsea.

However, both results were disappointing and Arsenal enter the new year in 12th place – 11 points adrift of the top four and just six clear of the relegation zone.

Arteta's intention to play entertaining, high-tempo, football is obvious but it is less certain that he has the right group of players to execute those plans.

Arsenal's head coach cited a lack of fitness as a key reason for the drop in the second-half performance against Chelsea which was eventually punished by late goals from Jorginho and Tammy Abraham.

However, he may find it difficult to significantly improve those stamina levels in the middle of a campaign.

Arteta's team may also be suffering from a lack of confidence, having won just one of 15 games in all competitions.

Arsenal's defence has been an obvious area of weaknesses.

They have conceded 30 league goals (17 of them in home matches) and Arteta will be forced into a change to his back four after central defender Calum Chambers suffered a knee injury in the first half against Chelsea.

David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi formed the centre-back partnership for the rest of the game and could be asked to continue against United unless Rob Holding or Sokratis return to contention.

However, none of them are convincing and Arsenal's shaky rearguard is likely to be exposed by a United side which has looked a lot more potent in recent weeks.

Scoring goals was a struggle earlier in the campaign but they have netted two goals or more in ten of their last 13 matches.

Talented teenager Mason Greenwood has been a revelation, scoring four goals in his last five appearances, and Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford should be feeling confident after netting in the 2-0 success at Burnley on Saturday.

United won comfortably at Turf Moor – winning the shot count 14-8 - despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer making four changes and handing rare starts to reserve full-backs Ashley Young and Brandon Williams.

The Red Devils should be nearer to full-strength at the Emirates and look decent value to heap further misery on their old enemies.

Key stat

Arsenal have won one of their last 15 matches.
