Match preview

Arsenal replaced Manchester City as Premier League title favourites after their 2-0 victory at Tottenham and they can pass another major test by defeating Manchester United at the Emirates.

The Gunners have set the pace for five months but they are showing no signs of idling and their consistency and excellence appears to be getting under the skin of City manager Pep Guardiola, who was far from content despite watching his team win 4-2 at home to Tottenham on Thursday.

Guardiola has urged his players to show some of the fire evident in Arsenal's performances and abundant from the first whistle in last weekend's north London derby.

Arsenal's challenge is to maintain high standards and there is every reason to expect another strong performance against the Red Devils.

United were 3-1 winners at home to Arsenal in September and they came up trumps in another high-profile fixture last Saturday when Marcus Rashford's goal sealed a 2-1 success at home to Manchester City.

The success over City prompted optimistic talk of a title challenge but those hopes receded at Selhurst Park on Wednesday when Michael Olise's injury-time strike earned Crystal Palace a fortunate share of the spoils.

Defeat at Arsenal would leave United more than ten points adrift of the leaders and manager Erik ten Hag would probably accept a point as he focuses on the primary aim of Champions League qualification.

Even the notion of a top-four finish for United seemed fanciful after they lost to Brighton and Brentford in their opening two games, but they have responded by taking 39 points from the next 17 fixtures.

United's disappointment with the draw at Palace was compounded by a fifth yellow card of the season for Casemiro, who has been one of the unsung heroes of their campaign.

The former Real Madrid man arrived at a time when United's recruitment strategy was heavily criticised, but he has been a key cog in the side, offering protection for the back four and a knack of picking the right pass at the right time.

Casemiro's calm presence will be missed at the Emirates, making it easier for Arsenal to dominate possession and build up a head of steam.

United could be forced on to the counter-attack, making them heavily reliant on Rashford, who has taken on greater responsibility due to Anthony Martial's injury problems.

Arsenal need to keep a close eye on Rashford, who has scored eight goals in his last eight appearances, but their main focus will be to ensure a busy night for David De Gea.

Mikel Arteta's side are in the habit of flying out of the traps and have opened the scoring in 14 of their 18 Premier League games.

They are sure to be targeting another whirlwind start against a rejigged United midfield and an early goal could lay the foundation for a 16th league win of the campaign.
