England's Nations League challenge was ended by Holland at the semi-final stage but they can at least finish the inaugural campaign on a relative high by beating Switzerland in the third-place playoff in Guimaraes.

Defeat to Holland after extra-time on Thursday was a disappointment for Gareth Southgate's side, particularly following their impressive qualifying wins over Spain and Croatia.

England's lethargic performance has been criticised and the post-mortem has focused on the age-old problem of the Three Lions struggling to play out from the back.

Harry Winks may be the long-term answer but he was partying in sunnier climes as his teammates toiled against the Dutch, who deserved to progress 3-1 after extra-time.

Southgate's decision to axe Winks from his provisional squad seems a strange one, although in fairness to the England boss it was maybe a case of him not wanting another player in his squad arriving late due to last week's Champions League final.

There were already seven players making the short hop to Portugal from Madrid and perhaps Southgate deciding against fielding any of the victorious Liverpool and downbeat Tottenham players in his starting 11 counted against England in defeat to Holland.

Presumably wholesale changes will be made for this match, which is no more than a glorified friendly and in a bizarre twist, England may actually field a stronger side than for the semi-final with the Champions League participants likely to come in.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Danny Rose would be solid additions at full-back, while Joe Gomez's injury-hit campaign should not detract from his obvious quality. With a clear summer Gomez should be expected to become a regular for England and Liverpool next season.

Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson and Spurs pair Dele Alli and Eric Dier would have been England's first-choice midfield not too long ago, with Southgate's biggest decision whether to risk Harry Kane again after he was needed for 75 minutes on Thursday.

England had won six of their seven games, including a 1-0 success over Switzerland, prior to the Dutch defeat and they have triumphed in five of their last six friendlies if that counts for anything with so little to play for in this encounter.

Switzerland have had an extra day to prepare having suffered a 3-1 loss against Portugal on Wednesday when Cristiano Ronaldo's hat-trick decided their fate.

That game once again highlighted their lack of quality in the striking department.

First-choice forward Haris Seferovic is not up to standard and their equalising goal came from the softest of penalties.
