Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under massive pressure after Manchester United's miserable 2-0 loss to Burnley but he can finish the week in a stronger position by steering the Red Devils to an FA Cup fourth-round success at Tranmere.

United had to wait until Thursday night to discover the identity of their fourth-round opponents and they are probably happy to have avoided a trip to Watford, where they lost 2-0 in a Premier League encounter last month.

The Hornets rested their entire first team for Thursday's clash at Prenton Park, presenting a massive opportunity to Tranmere, who came through 2-1 after extra-time.

The Sky Bet League One side's challenge is to try to defeat a second top-flight team with just two days to prepare, but they face a much more difficult task against the Red Devils, who know nothing less than a dominant victory will satisfy their supporters.

Thousands of United fans voted with their feet at Old Trafford on Tuesday, leaving the scene well before the end of Burnley's fairly comfortable victory.

It was the first time United had lost to the Clarets in 11 games but, if they were to fall short at Tranmere, it would be a far bigger embarrassment and one which could trigger the end of Solskjaer's tenure.

The Norwegian knows the importance of bouncing back and is unlikely to take many chances with his selection.

He is limited by the key absences of Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford, but can still come up with a line-up which should have far too much quality and experience for Rovers, who are in the League One relegation zone.

For Tranmere to have a realistic chance they would need to outwork their opponents, but that is going to be difficult after they were taken to extra-time by the Hornets.

Micky Mellon's side will have the backing of the majority of a sellout crowd but there will be plenty of tired legs in the camp, making it difficult for them to deny time and space to United's technically superior players.

One change Solskjaer may consider is a recall for exciting 18-year-old striker Mason Greenwood.

The teenager was one of the few bright sparks when he came off the bench against Burnley and he could do plenty of damage against a tired third-tier defence.

Greenwood appeals as a 4-1 shot to score the first goal and, given the general chasm in class, there is merit in backing United to be in front at half-time and full-time.
