Match preview

Marine have come through seven FA Cup ties – four of them against opposition from a higher division – to set up their momentous third-round meeting against Tottenham but their journey will almost certainly come to an end at Rossett Park on Sunday.

There have been a few seismic FA Cup shocks over the years and older Spurs supporters may still suffer from the odd nightmare over the famous 2-1 loss away to third tier Port Vale in 1988.

However, if Jose Mourinho's side were to lose to Marine of the Northern Premier League Division One North West, it would be one of the biggest surprise in the competition's history.

The clubs are separated by seven divisions and 161 league positions and Marine are further disadvantaged by the absence of fans and their lack of recent competitive action - they haven't played since a 2-1 success away to City of Liverpool on December 26).

The biggest achievement of the Crosby's club's cup run came in the first round at League Two Colchester which they won 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Optimistic Marine fans might point out that Spurs lost an EFL cup tie to Colchester in September 2019, bowing out 4-3 on spot-kicks, but it is the flimsiest of form lines and not one which would allow a serious case to be built in favour of the Mariners.

Mourinho will rest players due to his side's busy schedule but his squad is among the strongest in the Premier League and there may even been places on the bench for Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son in case of emergency. It is highly likely that neither will be needed.

The Lilywhites have not scored more than three goals in a domestic fixture since winning 6-1 at Manchester United in October but they could help themselves to four or five against the Merseyside minnows.

Key stat

Tottenham have lost only one of their last 12 domestic away games.
