Match preview

Frank Lampard lifted the FA Cup on four occasions as a Chelsea player and he can be rewarded with his first Wembley experience as Blues boss with a quarter-final victory at Leicester.

Rookie manager Lampard is still learning on the job but Thursday’s 2-1 Premier League triumph at home to Manchester City was further evidence that he has his beloved Blues moving in the right direction.

City dominated possession, but they would against virtually anyone in Europe, and Chelsea showed great character and won as a result of creating the clearer opportunities.

That hard-fought victory against elite opposition took Chelsea’s winning run to four games in all competitions, a sequence that also includes claiming the scalp of new Premier League champions Liverpool in the previous round of the FA Cup.

Lampard has been lauded for his willingness to give youngsters a chance to shine and the emergence of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Reece James and Billy Gilmour suggests the future is bright at Stamford Bridge.

Abraham, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic, Pedro and Ruben Loftus-Cheek were among the substitutes against Pep Guardiola’s slick Citizens, which illustrates both their strength in depth and their ability to cope with the quick turnaround.

With Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech set to link up with Lampard next season, there’s going to be stiff competition for places and if that doesn’t motivate Chelsea’s current crop of attackers it’s difficult to know what will.

Just one point separates this Champions League-hunting pair in the Premier League table and both their meetings this season ended all-square, so it’s understandable to expect another tight encounter at the King Power Stadium.

However, while Chelsea look to be growing in belief after consecutive 2-1 wins over Aston Villa and City, Leicester have a point to prove after resuming their campaign with drab draws against Watford and Brighton.

Despite taking a 90th-minute lead at Watford through a superb solo strike from Ben Chilwell, the Foxes were unable to hang on for maximum points, while it took a penalty stop from Kasper Schmeichel to deny the Seagulls a surprise away victory.

Leicester have won just six of their 16 games in all competitions this year and three of those victories were recorded in the FA Cup against Sky Bet Championship teams Wigan, Brentford and Birmingham.

The wait for a 100th Premier League goal goes on for Jamie Vardy, who has netted just three times in his last 15 starts, and with their talisman failing to fire the Foxes look vulnerable against confident Chelsea.

Key stat

Chelsea are unbeaten in six domestic matches, scoring two or more on each occasion.
