Match preview
Europa League Group G has gone down to the wire and it’s worth backing Rangers to hold their nerve and book their place in the last 32 by beating Young Boys at Ibrox.
Five days after suffering Betfred Cup final heartache at Celtic’s hands, Steven Gerrard’s men should be trusted to return to winning ways against their Swiss opponents.
That would mean avenging a 2-1 loss suffered in Berne in October, the Scottish outfit’s only defeat during the campaign, and they are more than capable.
The Gers need only a draw to clinch qualification but it's unlikely Gerrard would settle for that and anyway it promises to be a pretty open contest because Young Boys may well have to win to make it through.
The group is on a knife-edge – all four teams can go through yet none of them have already made it – but Rangers have a significant edge at home, where they have beaten Porto and Feyenoord without conceding a goal.
The Gers have won seven in a row at home and have lost only once at Ibrox – to Celtic, inevitably – since March.
Colombian frontman Alfredo Morelos has scored 25 goals this season – including the one they mustered in the away game – and there’s a potency about Gerrard’s men.
And while they are rock-solid at home, Young Boys seem to struggle on their travels. They’ve won only one of their last 20 away European fixtures and have failed to win seven of their last nine Swiss Super League and Europa League road trips.
Gerardo Seoane is missing a number of key players with injuries biting and they concede far too many goals. They are top of the table in Switzerland but have shipped an astonishing 24 goals in 17 matches, many against modest opposition.
Key stat
Young Boys have conceded 15 goals in their last seven matches.
